Best Marine Fragrances

What are marine fragrances and why are they so great during the summer? Marine fragrances often contain an aromatic compound called Calone© which has an intense sea breeze scent with floral and melon undertones. They take you to the seashore and have a watery freshness that suggests a vacation by the ocean. They differ from aquatic fragrances; marine fragrances are meant capture only aspects of the sea and ocean, not just water. They can smell salty, fruity/floral, woody, ambery, fresh and aromatic. There is a marine fragrance for everyone and to suit all occasions.

The “OGs” of Marine Fragrances

New West For Aramis

New West by Aramis

New West is said to be the first scent to use the note of Calone© in 1988 and is the first of the modern marine fragrances, leading the way for hundreds to follow. The secret to its continuing popularity is its uniqueness- it is complex and well designed.

Key Scent Notes: Calone©, bay leaf, pine, coriander, geranium, juniper berry, and watermelon.

L’Eau D’Issey by Issey Miyake

L'Eau d' Issey

L’Eau d’Issey was one of the first to use Calone© in a way that seemed transparent – from top to the base. Not only does L’Eau d’Issey smell of the sea, but of delicate flowers that grow nearby. Light, subtle and minimalistic, it is the brand’s best seller 30  years later. It is a great choice if you are new to marine fragrances.

Key Scent Notes: Calone©, melon, lotus

Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder

One of the most beautiful of all marine fragrances is Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder which is a radiant floral that smells of sea, sand and suntan lotion. In the Virgin Islands, white frangipani hang from sea cliffs and the delicate white blooms are surrounded by coconut trees gently swaying in the breeze overlooking the water. The opening of fresh lime and juicy bergamot, accompanied by the scent of coconut and rum, creates the sensation of drinking a cocktail at a seaside bar.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Acqua Celestia

Acqua Celestia Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Aqua Celestia was composed after Master Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian returned from Formentera, an island off the coast of Spain. According to the brand, “Aqua Celestia forms a seamless bond between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea, forging a path toward absolute serenity. A heavenly freshness, an emotional journey lulled by the harmony of the senses and the mind.” Acqua Celestia is the equivalent of jumping into the Mediterranean sea on a particularly scorching day and torrents of mints and puffs of mimosa meld into a luminous silver glow on your skin. Clean and crystalline.

Key Scent Notes: lime, mint, sea notes, mimosa, white musk

Montale Sandflowers

Montale SANDFLOWERS

Sandflowers is a fantastic example of a unisex marine fragrance. Woody aromatic notes of sandalwood and juniper are blended with sea notes and  like most Montale Perfumes there is an Eastern vibe. Have you traveled to the Persian Gulf where sea and sand meet? Wherever you are, you only need a few spritzes to take you there.

Key Scent Notes: Calone©, juniper, sandalwood, algae

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt

Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt captures the wild beauty of the sea. Salt and seaweed combine with sunny grapefruit and the grassy sage that you would find growing on sand dunes. There is a soft musky aroma that evokes salt drying on warmed skin.
